Why is it so hard for accountants to take the social media plunge?

It was a Tuesday morning and I was sitting in bed starting my work day by perusing my LinkedIn and Twitter feed. My husband was at the desk (the desk that just so happens to serve as our nightstand…romantic I know) sorting through his inbox before heading into the office.

Emily and I had recently started a collaborative discussion group for Future CPA Firm Leaders and decided to move the conversation online with a LinkedIn group. Long story short, the first discussion topic was posted to the group’s page, and the following “in person” conversation took place between the hubs and me:

Hubs: “Did you see Emily’s post on the CPA Link group page this morning?”

Me: “Yeah, what did you think about it?”

Hubs: “……………beginning…………………………middle………expanded middle………………some additional middle…………………continuing the middle…………………………end.”

My point is, he had SO MUCH TO SAY! I suggested he post his thoughts to the group’s discussion board. By the expression on his face, you would have thought I had asked him to dive into the ocean and hold his breath for 12 minutes before resurfacing.

For the next 45 minutes he sat there, debating whether he should actually post his thoughts to the group, re-writing, editing, analyzing every little piece of it to death. It was the most torturous and agonizing exercise I had ever witnessed. He battled with the idea that he was going to put something in black and white for the world (at this time 11 members) to see and judge. This smart, confident, laid-back, shoot-from-the-hip guy was in extreme turmoil over a 45-word comment on social media.

I think a lot of people, accountants and non-accountants alike, experience a similar situation when taking the social media plunge. But for accountants, those organized, analytical, practical people of the world, it can be the SCARIEST thing on the planet.

So, for all my accountant friends out there still sitting in the background, know you’re not alone. And please, take the plunge; you have so much to offer…the world wants to hear!!

And with that said…here is our first blog post. What do you think? Wait, don’t tell me…okay tell me…no don’t tell me, okay go ahead, lay it out there :)
